About Poetry London

About Poetry London

Poetry London was created by poet Cornelia Hoogland in the fall of 2004 to serve as a focus for poetry in London, Ontario. Now in its third season, Poetry London attracts local and international poets, our own award-winning Brick Books, and writers from the University of Western Ontario, Fanshawe College, local high schools, and the community. Poetry London cooperates with three other reading venues – Toronto’s Art Bar, The Hamilton Poetry Centre and Redeemer College in Ancaster – to provide national poets a four-stop southwestern Ontario tour. Past seasons have included a dynamic mix of both young and established voices, including Governor General Award winners Tim Lilburn and Patrick Lane, also Pier Giorgio Di Cicco, and newer writers Sue Sinclair and Alison Pick.

Poetry London is co-sponsored by its members, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Fred Landon Branch of the London Public Library, and the London Arts Council. We are also grateful to the London Hilton and Ben Thanh Restaurant for their support. Oxford Books, which has served writers in London for the past 55 years, provides a book sale following each reading. Reading/workshop events are held approximately once a month between October and April, at the Fred Landon Branch of the London Public Library. If you have ideas or input for our organization, would like more information, or would like to be added to our mailing list, please contact the Fred Landon Branch library at 439-6240.

Poetry Workshops

Prior to each poetry reading, Cornelia Hoogland leads a discussion of one or two poems by that evening’s featured poets, and invites participants to read their own poems in a “mutually supportive” group discussion atmosphere. One or two participants will open the evening with a short reading of their own work. People who do not have poems of their own to bring, but who enjoy discussing poems, or learning more about the art form, are welcome to attend the workshop. Workshops are held at 6:30 p.m. at the Landon Branch Library, one hour before the scheduled 7:30 p.m. readings. What to bring: A copy of a ONE PAGE typed poem that you wish to share in public discussion with the group. Photocopying will be done on site.
