About the Project:
Within the broad category of contemporary society, my study looks at two
main sets of experience. In the convenience-rich countries such as Canada
and other Western countries, I examine handicrafts, art, and manual labour.
In the developing and less technologically-driven countries such as Indonesia
and Cuba, I examine the rich and artful innovations and inventions of
hands generally observable on streets and in towns, and again, the sense
of place and belonging (or exploitation) they create.
This project for which we are asking your submissions is the first stage
of this larger project. Your submissions will become part of an online
anthology. This anthology will bring together writing by travellers, anthropologists,
novelists and poets who write about the relationships among hands, meaning
and belonging. The website will include photographs and art produced by
participants in this study and visitors to this site.
The second stage is to post the submissions that we receive, and to invite
dialogue regarding the postings.
